Cancer Awareness
Knowledge Saves Lives
Understanding cancer, knowing the warning signs, and acting early are some of the most powerful tools we have. Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Why Awareness Matters
Early Detection Changes Everything
When cancer is found early, it is often far more treatable — and survival rates are significantly higher. In the Northern Cape, where lung cancer and mesothelioma rates are high due to the region’s mining history, awareness and early screening are especially important. Knowing what to look for, and acting quickly, can save your life or the life of someone you love.
Know the Signs
Common Warning Signs
These symptoms don’t always mean cancer — but if you notice any of them, especially if they persist, please see a doctor. Early checks bring peace of mind.
Unusual Lumps or Swelling
Any new lump, thickening, or swelling anywhere on the body — including the breast, neck, or testicles — should be checked.
Persistent Cough or Hoarseness
A cough that won’t go away, shortness of breath, or a hoarse voice lasting more than a few weeks — particularly important given local lung cancer risk.
Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing a noticeable amount of weight without trying can sometimes be a sign that something is wrong.
Unusual Bleeding
Any unexplained bleeding — including blood in urine or stool, or unusual vaginal bleeding — should be investigated.
Skin or Mole Changes
A mole that changes shape, size, or colour, or a sore that doesn’t heal, can be an early sign of skin cancer.
Persistent Changes in the Body
Ongoing changes in bowel or bladder habits, difficulty swallowing, or unusual fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest.
Prevention
Reducing Your Risk
While not all cancers can be prevented, a healthy lifestyle can significantly lower your risk. Small, consistent changes make a real difference:
- Don’t smoke, and avoid exposure to tobacco smoke
- Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
- Stay physically active and maintain a healthy weight
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Protect your skin from the sun
- Get vaccinated (such as the HPV vaccine)
- Attend regular cancer screenings
Screening Saves Lives
Who Should Be Screened
Regular screening can catch cancer before symptoms even appear. Speak to us about the right screening schedule for you.
Breast Cancer
Women should be aware of changes in their breasts and discuss regular mammograms with their doctor, especially from middle age.
Cervical Cancer
Regular Pap smears help detect cervical changes early. The HPV vaccine offers important added protection.
Prostate Cancer
Men, particularly from middle age, should discuss prostate screening (PSA testing) with their doctor.
Colon Cancer
Screening such as colonoscopy is recommended from middle age, or earlier if you have a family history.
Lung Cancer
Especially important in our region. Current and former smokers, and those with mining-related exposure, should discuss screening with us.
